What other superhero time period movies could be made?

X-Men: First Class has proven setting superhero movies in historic time periods is a winning formula. It adds a degree of reality to the film, whilst making the movie smarter than your average comic book movie. If anything X-Men: First Class has shown superhero movies now need to offer something different in order to succeed. If setting the film in the 60’s was an instant hit, it’s left me wondering what other superhero time period movies could be made?

Spider-Man: Noir

For those who don’t know, Spider-Man: Noir is an alternative take on the web-slinger, setting the mythos in 1933 during the Great Depression. What makes this stand out as a potential hit, is that Hollywood has been fencing with how the turn the Spider-Man character dark, jumping on the success of films such as The Dark Knight. Whilst it may be difficult to turn the modern day Spidey into a dark brooding hero, Spider-Man: Noir is a different beast all together. Times are hard, super villains are mob bosses, and all together this could be a broody comic book flick to rival the likes of DC’s Watchmen and The Dark Knight.

Bishop and Cable

These are two of the X-Men‘s most iconic characters, simply because they are known for time travelling to and back to the future. These characters give Fox the potential to start a whole new spin-off series, which would be similar in scope to the Terminator franchise. Bishop would be more difficult to translate on screen, given his clustered origin, but Cable would be much easier to connect to the current films. Cable’s origin would need to be changed in order for it to work on screen, but something like Cyclops and Jean’s love child develops an early mutation and time travels into the future where he grows up would work perfectly. It’s a risky move but I believe it would pay off massively for Fox.  I assume Fox hold he rights to these characters so a high budget futuristic series would be a good movie for them if they moved on from classic men in spandex superhero films and more into the realms of sci-fi.

World War 2

Audiences will get their first taste of a World War 2 set superhero flick when Captain America: The First Avenger hits screens in July. If the WW2 setting works well for Marvel, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw more superhero adventures set in the early 1940’s. There’s great potential too. Sadly Wolverine and Captain America belong to different studios so we’ll never see a WW2 team up move on the scale, but some WW2 Cap and Logan solo adventures could be just as fun. Captain America might not work as effectively on screen in the present day, so Marvel Studios would be wise to keep in the WW2 setting for the sequel. This would allow us to see classic WW2 Cap villains such as Baron Zemo and Baron Strucker. With Logan on the other hand, Fox would be wise to wipe over the memory of X-Men Origins: Wolverine and give us a whole new take on Logan’s WW2 adventures, giving that the opening credit war scenes from Origins were the best part of the entire movie.

These are just some of the potential superhero time period movies that could be made. I personally would love a Spider-Man: Noir flick, but if you have any suggestions or ideas for great superhero time period movies then feel free to leave your comments below.

  1. Spider Man and Noir doesn’t seem to fit well to me, but who knows.

Superman during the Great Depression would seem a no-brainer to me. Or like a big, glossy, 1940’s-ish Superman – that could work, too.

    • I think Superman has great potential, especially with what you said about him during the Great Depression. I find it hard to picture DC ever having the will power to actually make anything like this though. Especially since they could also do Superman Red Son in the 1950’s set in Soviet Union Russia.
