Google Reader vs Google News!

For my multimedia journalism assignment I’ve been asked to compare Google Reader and Google news. As well as this, I was asked to see if I liked them compared to my usual news outlets.

To start with, both are really easy to use, but in terms of usefulness, I have to say I prefer Google news. It’s simplistic interface means I get a good variation of news delivered on my page, with the sites I visit most regularly at the top. I found that to be a very simplistic yet effective option

Google Reader is more effective for receiving updates from my most visited sites, as Reader places all of the content from my favorite sites on my subscription page. Really useful for when I need information that isn’t specifically related to news, however in the morning I’m more likely to want a good varied news update. That’s why for me Google news trumps the debate.

Are they likely to replace my normal news outlets? The news update I get from the BBC News website which I visit every day is still my personal favorite. I may be old fashioned but Google Reader’s mixed layout isn’t really a massive benefit to have, and for now, Google News doesn’t strike me as anything special.
